Seung Hwan Seo 2019.05.03 | 관리자

Artist, Seung Hwan Seo, is having his fourth year at 'Street Art' School. He is a new artist literally learning art on the street and has been drawing on the canvas for less than 4 years. His drawing represents outstanding colors. At the same time, it represents the balance and harmonization of contrast made by strong colors. In addition, it represents the message of an artist or the story to develop on the canvas re-interpreting existing images or shapes and maintaining the balance in harmonization of divided sides, patterns, and dots.

<Past and Present>, 2019, mixed media acrylic on canvas, 90×70cm
Tamlasunryukdo is a sketchbook recording the images in Jeju Island about 300 years ago. This work was drawn to identify the military organization, training, weapon, or military provisions. There are also drawings containing the images of events or famous places in Jeju Island at that time that are not related to the purpose. This piece has high historical value as people are able to see the image of Jeju Island 300 years ago and also circumstances at that time through the short records.
I intended to record 'New Tamla' changed gradually over the period of 300 years and formed with new culture. Jeju Island changed much during a long period of time, and people also changed. Many of the young people moved to Jeju Island forming new culture (e.g. flee-market, guest house party, etc.) as well as culture such as accommodation business, rent car, and restaurant business. In addition, as a Jeju Island for vacation spot, yacht, submarine, surfing, or leisure culture were created.
Jeju Island is now a different place compared to the past.
With such changes, Jeju Island is still maintaining tangerine orchard, camellia flower, stone granpa, volcanic cone, natural scene, and geographical value. At the same time, there has been an increasing number of individuals or groups to protect environment in Jeju Island. Jeju Island has changed much. However, it is still very valuable for an artist to record Jeju Island with geographical and cultural values.
By connecting my personal image of Jeju Island and the historical value of 'Tamlasunryukdo,' I connected the past and the present. I also believe that it is valuable to refresh perspective about how much Jeju Island has changed so far and how it should change in the future.
Referring to the structure of existing Tamlasunryukdo, I overlapped my personal image of Jeju Island on top of it. Overall, it might as well look like a landscape containing images of Jeju Island. However, I specifically intended to convey the current culture of Jeju Island in it.
I wish the new Tamlasunryukdo display to become an exhibition connecting the past and the present of Jeju Island.

LUCE (Hyun-jung Song)

This was my first time having a tattoo inside my right middle finger in my life. It says, 'Luce in Altis.' This means to shine in a high place. However, 'Luce' was deleted that only 'Altis' is now left. Therefore, I write 'Luce' on every drawing. Depression I feel on top is sh…
